At the start of September, Europeana won the European Commission’s tender to deploy the common European data space for cultural heritage. Our role in the data space is a fantastic opportunity to continue driving our sector’s digital transformation, as is the Europeana Foundation’s involvement in the new EIT ‘Culture & Creativity’ innovation community. The benefits that collaboration - and data sharing - bring were also emphasised in new case studies from Europeana’s accredited aggregator for photography, Photoconsortium.
Did you see the Europeana website’s new look? It’s been redesigned to more effectively communicate what the site is all about and how you can use it. Elsewhere, we’ve looked at how Europeana content is being brought to audiences from museums to the classroom.
In 2021, Europeana Research Grants Programme awarded funding for innovative projects exploring crowdsourcing and research. What did the winners achieve? We hear from projects researching the Anthropocene, exploring geodata and helping institutions with crowdsourcing.

Our first hybrid annual conference took place at the end of September 2022. ‘Europeana 2022: Making digital culture count’ explored a range of issues and big topics relating to how we build the new common European data space for cultural heritage. We also shared our reflections on organising a hybrid event. Elsewhere, an online subtitling contest invited the public to correct AI-generated subtitles on TV clips.
