The 3DBigDataSpace project aims to increase the amount of high-quality 3D models in the common European data space for cultural heritage and establish a Europe-wide, stable, long-term storage solutions for 3D models. The project has just launched its second course on Europeana Academy, Advanced exploration with the 4D browser, which offers more insight and detailed training on the use of the 4D Browser, a pioneering visualisation tool, developed by the University of Jena that merges space, time, and cultural heritage into a single digital experience.
Through the course, 'You will learn how to examine historical change in depth by combining time, visualisation tools, and contextual information,‘ say the course developers. ‘Using the 4D Browser, you will uncover patterns and work with texts connected to buildings, photographs, and locations to add historical meaning to what you see. Together, these approaches will help you better understand and analyse how and why the city of Dresden evolved over time.'
Who should take this course?
The course is perfect for researchers, heritage professionals, educators and anyone curious about using digital tools to explore the history of cities, particularly those who have some familiarity with the 4D Browser.
What will you learn?
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to: · Use the time slider to analyse historical changes in depth · Apply visualisation tools to support interpretation · Explore textual information linked to buildings, photos, and locations · Combine multiple data layers to generate new historical insights
What are the technical requirements for the course?
The 4D Browser is an an online based tool, so for the best experience, the course developers recommend using the latest browser with HTML5/WebGL support (Google Chrome works best), a computer or laptop with full HD resolution (1920x1080 pixels), and a mouse for interaction. Mobile devices and touchpads will work, but are not fully supported yet. Whether you’re looking to uncover hidden histories or explore patterns across Dresden’s urban development, this advanced course gives you the tools to bring the city’s past to life interactively.
How can you prepare for the course?
You can start with the Introduction to the 4D Browser course to get familiar with navigating the 3D model, exploring historical photographs, and understanding how time adds a fourth dimension to the city. Once you’re ready, the advanced course will build directly on that foundation.
